Albany, 01/03/2025 — The New York State Minorities in Criminal Justice, Inc. (NYSMICJ) expresses profound sorrow and outrage over the death of Robert Brooks, who died as a result of inhumane and inexcusable actions taken by correction officers employed by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) at Marcy Correctional Facility. This tragedy underscores ongoing systemic issues within our correctional system that disproportionately affect marginalized communities.
Robert Brooks’ death is a devastating reminder of the urgent need for accountability, transparency, and reform within New York’s correctional institutions. The use of excessive force has no place in any part of the justice system, and it is critical that the officers involved in this incident be held accountable through a thorough and impartial investigation.
Our organization calls upon Governor Kathy Hochul, the New York State Legislature, and DOCCS leadership to take immediate action to prevent further loss of life, including:
NYSMICJ remains committed to fighting for justice, fairness, and equity in the criminal justice system and stands ready to assist DOCCS with the development and implementation of change. We stand with Robert Brooks’ family and loved ones during this immensely difficult time. Their grief and demands for justice must not go unanswered.
This tragedy is not isolated. It reflects a broader pattern of violence and neglect in our correctional institutions. We must act decisively to protect the dignity and lives of all individuals in state custody, regardless of their circumstances.
